Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 launched: brings huge improvements over the 865

Qualcomm has introduced its latest flagship smartphone processor Snapdragon 888 5G on the first day of Snapdragon Tech Summit Digital. This new powerful SoC will be the first choice SoC for flagship Android smartphones in 2021. Brands like Xiaomi, Oppo, Realme, and OnePlus have already confirmed that their next flagship smartphones will be powered by Snapdragon 888 chipset.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC Availability

Xiaomi has confirmed that the upcoming Mi 11 will be the first phone to include the Snapdragon 888 SoC. Realme ‘Race’ as well as Red Magic 6, Oppo Find X3, Nubia Z, and ZTE Axon 30 series are set to debut in the first quarter of 2021 with the newly launched Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC. The smartphone manufacturers declared their launch plans just after Qualcomm unveiled its latest platform.

Why Qualcomm Snapdragon 888?

Snapdragon 888 is manufactured using 5nm process technology powered by Qualcomm Kryo 680 CPU which is claimed to generate up to a 25% uplift in overall CPU performance and allows top frequencies of up to 2.84GHz. It is also the first commercial CPU subsystem to be based on the Arm Cortex-X1.

5G Connectivity

X60 5G is based on a 5nm process and it is the first of its kind for that matter. Qualcomm claims this to be the most advanced 5G chipset. The integrated 3rd generation Snapdragon X60 5G Modem-RF System enables support for 5G sub-6 carrier aggregation.

The antennas for the X60 are also said to be smaller than the previous generation. Thus, it will be less challenging of a task for smartphone manufacture to fit them in their products. It comes along with Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth audio for enhanced mobile experiences.

Snapdragon Elite Gaming

Qualcomm claims that the third generation Snapdragon Elite Gaming feature offers the biggest leap in the GPU performance in the Adreno GPU history. As of now, the company has not any details of the GPU. However, the Elite Gaming Features bring updatable GPU drivers, a frame rate of up to 144fps, and Desktop Forward Rendering.

Image Signal Processing

Snapdragon 888 chipset comes with Spectra 580 ISP. It’s a triple Image Signal Processor (ISP), 35% faster than the previous generation capable of capturing from three cameras simultaneously at breakneck processing speeds up to 2.7 gigapixels per second. Qualcomm also says that the new SoC triples down on computational photography.

Going with the videography,  Smartphones will be able to support 120fps burst snapshots or capture three 4K HDR videos at the same time. New 4K HDR with computational HDR video capture provides dramatic improvements to color, contrast, and details.

Processing Speed and Heating

Qualcomm is claiming up to 26 Tera Operations per Second (TOPS). It’s a significant improvement over SD 865’s 16 TOPS. which is even faster than Apple’s A14 Bionic which managed up to 11 TOPS. It is also said to be more power-efficient. The new chipset flaunts a Qualcomm Hexagon 780 processor delivering up to three times performance per watt improvement over the prior generation and we all know when the energy is less consumed the heating issue of smartphones decreases rapidly.
